John F. Kennedy custom engraved sterling silver cigarette box presented to Benjamin A. Smith II as a wedding gift from President Kennedy and the four fellow ushers in Smith’s wedding to Barbara (“Sis”) Mechem. Measuring 7.25 x 3.5 x 2”, the handsome sterling silver box features a fitted wooden interior and an engraved “B.A.S.” monogram at center, surrounded by the engraved signatures of the five ushers: John F. Kennedy; Kennedy and Smith’s former Harvard roommates Torbert “Torb” Macdonald and Charles G. Houghton Jr.; and Barbara’s brothers, Robert C. Mechem and John S. Mechem. The underside bears the maker’s mark, “Sterling 104.”
This extraordinary personal presentation piece represents one of the most intimate Kennedy-related artifacts to emerge from the collection of Benjamin A. Smith II. The box was specially commissioned and engraved by the groom’s closest friends to commemorate his marriage. Among those friends was John F. Kennedy, who served as one of Smith’s wedding ushers alongside fellow Harvard roommates Torbert “Torb” Macdonald and Charles G. Houghton Jr., as well as Barbara’s brothers, Robert C. Mechem and John S. Mechem. Their engraved signatures transform this elegant sterling silver box into a unique, one-of-a-kind keepsake celebrating one of the most important moments in Smith’s life.
Benjamin A. Smith II and John F. Kennedy first met as roommates at Harvard University and remained lifelong friends. Kennedy later appointed Smith to the United States Senate following the death of Senator Leverett Saltonstall in 1960, and Smith continued to be a trusted confidant of the Kennedy family for decades.
The depth of the bond between Benjamin and his wife, Barbara (“Sis”) Mechem Smith, was perhaps best expressed years later by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis following Ben’s passing. In a deeply personal letter to Barbara, Jackie reflected not only on her affection for Ben, but also on the remarkable marriage they shared, writing: “I cannot believe that Ben is gone. There was no one of such goodness - I always see him with that wonderful smile, with laughter and loving kindness in his eyes. And you beside him smiling too. I thought you must be the happiest married couple there ever was.” The sentiment offers a rare glimpse into the genuine friendship shared between the Kennedy family and the Smiths, underscoring the deeply personal significance of gifts such as this sterling silver presentation box.
Good condition overall with attractive age-related patina and light handling marks consistent with age and use. The sterling silver exterior retains its crisp engraved decoration, while the fitted wooden interior remains clean and well preserved.
