Details:
A first edition copy of The Strategy of Peace by Senator John F. Kennedy, inscribed and secretarially signed to Benjamin A. Smith II, Harvard roommate of President Kennedy, lifelong friend of the Kennedy family, and former United States Senator from Massachusetts. On the front endpaper appears the inscription, “To Ben, with many thanks and warm personal regards,” followed by a secretarially executed “Jack” signature.
Importantly, the inscription and signature are not in the hand of President Kennedy and is secretarial. Such presentation copies were frequently prepared for close friends, political supporters, and associates during Kennedy’s Senate and presidential years, with secretaries often executing inscriptions and signatures on his behalf. Despite the secretarial nature of the inscription, the association between Kennedy and the recipient makes this a highly desirable provenance piece.
Published in 1960 during Kennedy’s presidential campaign, The Strategy of Peace collects many of his most important speeches and policy statements concerning national defense, foreign affairs, nuclear disarmament, civil liberties, and America’s role in the Cold War. The volume offers a revealing look at the ideas and positions that helped define Kennedy’s campaign and would later shape his presidency.
Benjamin A. Smith II (1916–1991) was among John F. Kennedy’s closest lifelong friends. The two met while students at Harvard University and maintained a close friendship throughout Kennedy’s political career and presidency. Following Kennedy’s election to the White House, Smith was appointed to fill JFK’s vacant United States Senate seat, serving as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1960 to 1962. Smith occupies a unique place in American political history as both Kennedy’s Harvard roommate and the man selected to succeed him in the Senate.
The first edition volume retains its original dust jacket and exhibits expected age toning, foxing, and handling wear.
