Details:
An original 1960 John F. Kennedy presidential campaign pin accompanied by a signed provenance letter detailing its remarkable history. The gold-tone campaign pin, bearing Kennedy’s iconic “K” campaign design, was reportedly personally gifted by Kennedy to a close friend and fellow PT boat captain, Mr. Stower, who later assisted with Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign.
Included is a signed October 2, 2014 letter from collector Stephen Sommers stating that the pin was presented by Kennedy himself to Mr. Stower, a fellow World War II PT boat commander. According to the letter, Stower later helped with Kennedy’s presidential campaign before joining the Department of the Interior in 1961, where he remained for three decades until his retirement in 1991. The letter further notes that the pin remained within the Stower family, along with several letters from Kennedy, until being acquired from a relative in 2007.
The association with Kennedy’s wartime service and his enduring friendships forged during World War II adds significant historical interest to the piece. Kennedy’s command of PT-109 and the camaraderie shared among PT boat veterans became a lasting part of his personal and political story, with many former servicemen remaining among his closest supporters throughout his public career.
Condition is as shown. The pin exhibits handling and age wear consistent with its history. The original clasp mechanism has become detached from the body of the pin; however, both components remain present and accompany the lot. The accompanying signed provenance letter remains in good condition.
John F. Kennedy (1917–1963) served as the 35th President of the United States and remains one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century. A decorated Navy veteran whose heroism following the loss of PT-109 became legendary, Kennedy rose from the U.S. House of Representatives to the Senate and ultimately the presidency in 1960. His administration was marked by the Space Race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the creation of the Peace Corps, and a renewed vision of public service that continues to resonate today.
