The Free , refers to a prominent line of antique and vintage sewing machines produced by The Free Sewing Machine Company , which operated out of Rockford, Illinois. Ironically, the company's literal name caused severe marketing confusion for over half a century, forcing salespeople to constantly clarify to customers that the machines were named after the company's president, William C. Free, and were not actually free of charge.
