Description
Charles Christopher Hill (b. 1948) is an American artist and printmaker. This exquisite piece was featured on the cover of the London gallery exhibition from 2001 titled "Ten Thousand Moments."
From the exhibition write-up, "Hill came to the motif for these new paintings through serendipity; while driving on holiday in Spain, he made a quick stop-off by a sign reading "˜Cuevas Prehistorica del Pindal'. In his words, "˜Pindal was on the road"¦ the usual images of horse and bison were there, but these were a bit out of the ordinary. Dots, dashes, broken lines, groups of marks delineating shapes, this was imaginative stuff. At the very end of the group of paintings... was a group of red dots. In two lines, maybe ten or twelve [dots] in all, they stuck out.' Months later, he began dreaming of them, and then his own paintings began. The appearance of these paintings is deceptively simple. In each case, it's just a bold image -- dots in rows -- yet it's in this simplicity where complexity can be found. The image shimmers, a side-effect of the layering. on close inspection, you see that the painting is made of hundreds if not thousands of layers. Truth is, every stroke of hill's brush is a moment, and each painting is ten thousand moments."
