Description
This intricately carved and gilded Chinese temple panel captures a rich narrative scene in high relief, likely repurposed from a larger architectural element of a Qing dynasty temple or ancestral hall. The composition features robed figures near a pavilion, birds in flight, and lush foliage, all carved in deep layers and finished in gold leaf over red and black pigments.
Originally part of a ceremonial structure or altar surround, the panel has been mounted in a rectangular red lacquer frame for display as a wall-hanging artwork. The sculptural depth, craftsmanship, and symbolism, birds representing harmony and trees suggesting longevity, give the piece both spiritual and decorative significance.
Some small losses are present, including areas of missing bird wings and background foliage, noticeable on close inspection. These do not detract from the overall impact of the carving and are consistent with age and use. Hanging hardware is affixed on the back.
15.25" wide, 1" deep, and 7.25" high.
