Description
This antique 12 1/2-inch stoneware vase by the Royal Nishiki Nippon Company displays a refined elegance characteristic of late 19th to early 20th-century Japanese artistry.
The form is nearly cylindrical, subtly tapering toward a slightly flared, rounded base, before ascending into a steep, graceful transition into a wide neck. The lip at the top is smooth and unfurled.
Set against a deep black background, the decoration is executed using moriage and coralene techniques, which give the surface a dimensional, textured quality through the use of raised enamel. The motif is bordered and defined by these raised details, creating a tactile richness.
A bird, poised delicately on a branch, is rendered with feathers outlined in a harmonious blend of coppery orange and soft ivory tones. The tree branches supporting the bird arc gently in natural, organic curves, suggesting motion and life.
From these limbs spring clusters of stylized blossoms with burnt orange petals. The flowers are further adorned with leafy accents in shades of moss.
