Description
Red Deer Trophy by Franz Joseph, Prince of Thurn and Taxis, 1969
This hunting trophy features a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) with abnormal antlers, mounted on a finely carved wooden plaque painted in dark and golden brown tones. The skull bears a princely crown, a monogram, as well as the place and date of the hunt. The trophy was taken by Franz Joseph, Prince of Thurn and Taxis (1893–1971). He was known for using distinctive symbols beyond the general family coat of arms on his hunting trophies and forestry markings. The initials "˜F.J.' beneath a princely crown were commonly used to clearly associate hunted game with his ownership and period. Today, such trophies are rare historical collectibles and are often displayed as decorative statement pieces with strong aristocratic and hunting heritage associations.
Trophies are mementos from the hunted game, which are kept by the huntsmen as a souvenir or decorative item. For many centuries it was a tradition to collect trophies. Today, such traditional hunting trophies are collectible items and are often used as rustic or alpine-style décor.
