C-18779
Hand-cranked Model 3 suppository machine produced by Whitall Tatum Co., mounted to its original wooden base and fitted with a large cast iron flywheel. Designed for pharmaceutical and apothecary use, the machine was used to form medicinal suppositories in a consistent size and shape, reflecting late 19th-century efforts to standardize drug preparation. The cast iron frame, threaded drive screw, and heavy wheel illustrate the robust, purpose-built construction typical of period medical equipment. The lot includes an accompanying Ideal Capsule Filler, housed in its original wooden box, used for filling gelatin capsules with powdered or granulated medicine. Capsule fillers like this were standard fixtures in pharmacies before factory-sealed medications became widespread, allowing pharmacists to compound prescriptions on demand. Together, these pieces represent a rare survival of pre-industrial pharmaceutical production tools, bridging handcraft and early mechanization in medicine. Whitall Tatum Co. was one of the most important American suppliers to the pharmaceutical trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best known for its glassware but also producing and distributing specialized druggist equipment such as this machine.
Both pieces show paint wear, surface oxidation, and handling wear consistent with age and professional use. Mechanical components appear intact, though no operational testing has been performed.
Suppository machine: approx. 13" L x 8" dia (wheel)
