This Civil War-era Richardson & Overman Gallager Carbine is chambered in .50 caliber black powder and features a 22-inch barrel with a 13.25-inch length of pull. This percussion cap breech-loading carbine is in excellent functional mechanical condition with a crisp, smooth-operating action. The firearm shows minor signs of use and wear consistent with normal handling and age. The bore is in good condition, retaining sharp and reflective rifling.
Manufactured by Richardson & Overman during the American Civil War, the Gallager Carbine was one of the many breech-loading carbines issued to Union cavalry forces. Patented by Mahlon J. Gallager, its innovative break-open action provided a faster rate of fire than traditional muzzleloaders while maintaining a simple and durable design. Original Gallager Carbines are highly collectible today for their Civil War service history, distinctive breech-loading mechanism, and relatively limited production compared to other cavalry carbines.
