This antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall was manufactured in 1890 and is chambered in .40-70 Ballard. It features a 30-inch octagon barrel with a 13-inch length of pull. The rifle is in functional mechanical condition and shows signs of use and wear consistent with a firearm of its age. The metal exhibits an attractive age-related patina throughout. The rear sight adjuster is a homemade replacement. The bore is in good condition, retaining sharp and reflective rifling.
Designed by John Moses Browning, the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall is widely regarded as one of the strongest and finest single-shot rifle actions ever produced. Manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, High Wall rifles were offered in a wide variety of chamberings and configurations for target shooting, hunting, and competition. Chambered in the classic .40-70 Ballard cartridge, this 1890-produced example represents an early production High Wall and remains highly desirable among collectors of antique Winchester firearms and classic American single-shot rifles.
