This Poultney & Trimble Smiths Patent percussion musket is chambered in approximately .50 caliber and features a 21.5-inch barrel with a 14.5-inch length of pull. The firearm is in functional mechanical condition and shows minor signs of use and wear consistent with normal handling and age. The musket displays overall patina throughout. It is missing the front sight blade. The receiver and barrel are serialized and matching. The bore is in good condition and is smooth and reflective.
This Smiths Patent design, manufactured and distributed through Poultney & Trimble, represents one of the transitional percussion-era American firearms systems produced in the mid-19th century. These break-open designs were part of early attempts to improve loading efficiency over traditional muzzleloading systems. Surviving examples are collected today for their unique mechanical design and Civil Warera historical associations.
