This rare Lindsay Model 1863 double hammer musket is chambered in .69 caliber percussion and features a 38-inch barrel with a 13.5-inch length of pull. The rifle is in functional mechanical condition and operates as designed. The unique double hammer system requires both hammers to be cocked, with the first trigger pull activating the right hammer and the second trigger pull activating the left hammer. The firearm shows an age-related patina and normal signs of use and wear consistent with its age. The bore is in good condition.
The Lindsay musket represents one of the more unusual experimental percussion-era designs produced during the American Civil War period. Its dual-hammer, dual-trigger system was intended to offer a simplified form of selective ignition, though it remained uncommon compared to standard single-lock muskets of the era. Surviving examples are scarce and highly sought after by collectors of early American military firearms and Civil War-era experimental arms.
