This Winchester Model 1876 lever-action rifle features a 28-inch octagon barrel with a 13-inch length of pull. The chambering is unknown, although the bore measures approximately .36 caliber. The rifle is in functional mechanical condition with the action operating as designed. The metal exhibits an age-related patina with areas of heavier oxidation and some deep pitting, particularly near the muzzle. The bore is in fair condition with the exception being the final 9 inches of bore that have seriously damaged rifling and pitting. The sliding dust cover is missing. The upper tang of the receiver has a crack in it. The lower tang has been repaired with a welded replacement section where the serial number would normally be located, making it impossible to determine the original serial number or date of manufacture. The barrel is unmarked for caliber, making the original chambering difficult to identify. the stock also has section of gaps and has minor signs of repair near hte toe.
Introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1876, the Winchester Model 1876 was a larger-framed evolution of the famed Model 1873, designed to handle more powerful cartridges suitable for larger game. Often associated with frontier hunters, ranchers, and lawmen of the American West, the Model 1876 remains one of Winchester's most iconic early lever-action rifles and is highly sought after by collectors today.
