Revolutionary War group lot of documents from the years 1780 to 1782. A total of thirteen documents of various sizes, mostly related to the 2nd Connecticut Regiment, and all with content regarding supplies and clothing for the Continental Army. The lot also includes a fair copy of a Prince William County, Virginia court judgment. Condition is generally very good to near fine, except as noted, with all having age-toning.
Includes:
Fair copy of a 1780 agreement between Hugh Hughes, Deputy Quarter Master, and Thomas Dubois, lime burner. 2pp, 7.5” x 12”, no place; November 4, 1780. Per the agreement, Dubois was to “deliver one thousand bushels of lime on or before the tenth day of December nexth [sic] at the rate of one Shilling or other Current Money.” Hughes would provide transportation, rations and provisions, including rum, for six men. Long separation along a horizontal fold.
Assistant Quarter Master Christopher Meng ALS. 2pp with integral address leaf, 5.625” x 8.125”, no place; June 25, 1781. A letter to John Fisher regarding tents left with him for repairs and asking him to “forward two thousand canteens to me at Peeks Kill.” Additional content coordinating the delivery of “knapsacks & Haversacks.” Fisher also served as an assistant quarter master and military supply agent. Christopher Meng (1750-1833) was born in Pennsylvania, and his family remained loyal to King George at the outbreak of the revolution. Less than four months after the date of this letter, Meng was the keeper of stores for both the Continental Army and the surrendered British forces under Cornwallis at Yorktown.
Manuscript return for clothing for the 2nd Connecticut Regiment for the year 1781, and January 1782. Together with ten related receipts signed by soldiers in the regiment for clothing issued to them during that period. The return measures 15.375” x 11.625” and is executed in a neat clerical hand. The receipts vary in size and are in multiple hands, with the soldier receiving the items signing at bottom, including two for soldier Cay (Kay) Cambridge who signs with his mark. Of note is a receipt signed by the regiment’s captain Joseph Wright, certifying that “The Select Men of the Town of Norwalk Supplyed William Jackson Late of My Company…now of the Core of Invalids with 2 Linnen Shirts & two pair of Shoes one Pair of Stockings…”
Period fair copy of the court judgment against Edmund Bentley in Prince William County, Virginia. 1p, 10.5” x 5.75”, October 2, 1781. Bentley is found not guilty of the theft of tanned leather. A Henry Lee is listed as a member of the presiding court, but it is unlikely that it is “Light-Horse Harry” as he was heavily involved in military actions that year. With a partial fair copy of a second court ruling on verso. Uneven right margin, where it was removed from a ledger.
