Description
Original copper engraving by JB Homann, Nuremberg, circa 1720. Titled: Virginia Marylandia et Carolina In America Septentrionali Britannorum industria exculta repraesentate.
Homann's map depicts the British Colonies in Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, southern New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The detailed cartouche on the map highlights the rich prospects for immigration. It features images of friendly, prosperous Native Americans, as well as robust commerce, fishing, and farming opportunities.
Homann's map was published at a period at the beginning of the 18th Century where the German public was increasingly interested in the British Colonies in North America. Nice detail in the interior of Virginia and Maryland for the period. New Jersey is divided into East and West New Jersey.
Additionally, the region in the west is Florida, extending to a curiously shaped and oversized Lake Erie. Indian tribes and place names, rivers, bays, coastal soundings, early settlements are detailed. Embellished by one of the most decorative cartouches to appear on a map of the region, showing figures from regional history and local trade with the English. The Atlantic is Mare Virgini [or] Sea of Virginy.
Custom conservation framed with UV-resistant glass, double linen mat and a wood frame. Dimensions: 31.5 x 36". Excellent condition.
