Description
This architectural element is a beautifully carved Chinese corbel (or bracket), likely once part of an altar, doorway, or temple interior. Crafted from wood and finished in a traditional cinnabar red lacquer, the piece features intricate high-relief carvings highlighted with gilt (gold leaf) and black accents.
The focal point of the carving is a spirited narrative scene set against a backdrop of stylized, swirling clouds. It depicts four figures—possibly Immortals or legendary warriors—engaged in dynamic action; one figure wields a broadsword, while others appear to be performing ritualistic or martial movements. Below the figures, a detailed phoenix (fenghuang) emerges from the foliage, its plumage meticulously etched. The entire composition is supported by a base shaped like a ceremonial vessel or basket with a cross-hatched pattern.
While the face of the corbel retains much of its vibrant color and gold detailing, the reverse side and edges show a weathered patina and remnants of adhesive or paper, suggesting it was salvaged from a larger structure. The graceful, curved silhouette combined with the dense, symbolic iconography makes it a striking example of late Qing Dynasty or early 20th-century folk art craftsmanship
