Description
A wonderful mahogany chest by Baker Furniture from their Colonial Williamsburg Collection. This chest (as with all the items in Baker's Williamsburg Collection) is an exact reproduction of an original chest displayed at Colonial Williamsburg and was licensed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. While this piece is relatively simple in design, it is adorned by intricately detailed carved decorations, of which the extraordinary shell carving in the center drawer takes the spotlight: its deep relief carved fan type shell is surrounded by applied carved foliate borders and features a central cast brass pull. Other carved decorations include shaped cabriole legs that repeat the carved fan motif at the knee and terminate with substantially detailed claw-and-ball feet. In addition. the chest features fluted half-round pilaster carvings at the front corners of the case.
This piece was purchased from Baker for display in our furniture showroom during the inaugural year that Baker Furniture was awarded the Williamsburg Reproduction license, 1991. It remained on our showroom floor as a display piece from which we took orders. This piece itself was never sold.
It is faithful in every respect to the original 18th century chest on display at Colonial Williamsburg. The chest is in excellent condition; any minor abrasions or surface scratches are consistent with age and it being on showroom display. The piece measures 36" wide x 21" deep x 32" high
