Description
A 19th Century French green glazed pottery jug with ovoid form, short flared neck and looped handles. Beautiful rustic patina, minor glaze loss, chipped bottom. Known as a conscience, these vessels were used by the clergy to collect olive oil donations for the poor. Rope was threaded through the handles to secure the jar on a donkey's back as he traveled from farm to farm. Instead of asking for a fixed quantity, the priest left the donation size up to the giver's conscience and generosity, in exchange for a blessing. Circa 1880-1900.
