Description
An 18th Century French Glazed terracotta walnut oil jug from the Perigord region in Southwestern France. Rich, rustic, dark olive green to brown lead glaze with beautiful natural variations and unique patina with speckled chips exposing the dark terracotta underneath. Large thick-walled boulbous body with vertical ribbing mimics the textures of a walnut shell. Three sturdy strap handles surrounding the rim is a hallmark trait highly tied to the regional potters in the Dordogne Périgord region. The narrow spout positioned high on the upper shoulder was designed for precise, glug-free pouring, easily plugged with a small wooded or cork stopper to keep air our of the delicate walnut oil. Circa 1780-1800
