(1887 - 1947) American naval officer who commanded the USS HORNET during the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo as well as the aircraft carriers of Task Force 58 in the Pacific area during World War II. War-date D.S., 1p. 4to., Noumea, Feb. 14, 1943, an order to an ensign to deliver a PBY-5 to a to-be-designated air station or field, boldly signed at bottom. Fine. SOLD WITH: an attached, associated order signed by Admiral JOHN H. TOWERS (1885-1955), a pioneering naval aviator who planned and led the first air crossing of the Atlantic and during World War II served as Commander, Air Force, Pacific Fleet. Towers supervised the development, organization, training, and supply of the fleet's growing aviation capability, and helped develop the strategy which destroyed the Japanese fleet. He signs an order to the same ensign ordering him to report to the commander of Air Fleet Two. With several other related documents. Fine.
