Description
(1905 - 2005) German boxer, heavyweight champion of the world, fought American Joe Louis in 1938 in the 'Fight of the Century' which was a worldwide cultural event because of their national associations. Schmeling fought with the Germans as a paratrooper during World War II, participating in the Battle of Crete in May 1941 where he was wounded by mortar fire shrapnel. Very rare war-date T.L.S. on his personal 12mo. correspondence card, Ponickel, Oct. 6, 1944 to a 'Herr Drewello' (probably the German boxing official of the same name), in German warmly thanking the man for sending him birthday greetings. Fine condition. Virtually nothing signed exists from Schmeling from during the war years.
