Partly-printed D.S. 1p. legal folio, Berlin, Sept. 25, 1942, an award of the Police Long Service Decoration, First Class issued to ‘Criminal Inspector’ KARL DANNER for his 25 years of service in the police. With Hitler’s printed signature at bottom and blind-embossed German eagle at lower left. Two file holes at left margin, central fold, else very good. KARL DANNER achieved the rank of SS-Obersturmfuhrer in the Reichssicherheitsdienst (RSD, lit. ‘Reich security service’). Originally bodyguards for Adolf Hitler, it later provided men for the protection of other high-ranking leaders of the Nazi regime. Its role also included personal security, investigation of assassination plots, surveillance of locations before the arrival of Nazi dignitaries and vetting buildings as well as guests. Specifically, Danner served under FRIEDRICH SCHMIDT (1902-1973), Deputy Gauleiter in Lodz until the end of October 1939, then serving as SS district chief in Lublin.
