Description
(1894 - 1987) Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering, Hess was one of Hitler's closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Fine content and association D.S. as Party Secretary on Adolf Hitler's letterhead, 1p. 4to., Munich, Aug. 26, 1929. Hess approves the typed text of a letter to be sent to 'All Speakers of the Movement', the letter reading in part: '...Dear Party Member, On 23rd October, the elections take place for the state parliament in Bavaria. Saxony and Mecklenburg show what possibilities the elections in individual states offer in the way of intensive propaganda for us. The elections to the Bavarian state parliament are important for us on various political grounds, and I therefore ask you to provide for the area leadership in Bavaria the largest possible number of rallies in any event, at least 6. Rallies connected with the battle over the elections for the Bavarian state parliament take precedence over all others in Germany during the period from 1st to 26th October. I ask the holding of the rallies mentioned to be looked on as a bounden duty...' Signed in type by Hitler, with Hess' pencil signature certifying the text as correct at lower-left. File holes at the left margin with some slight edge wear, else very good. In the 1929 elections, National Socialists and the Fascists, united among themselves (Hugenberg-Hitler) succeeded, in spite of the small number of voters, in increasing the number of their votes from 475,184 (in 1928) to 536,787, and the benefit fell wholly to the National Socialist Party. The following year, the Nazis would gain over 95 seats in the Reichstag, taking second place in the federal elections.
