Description
(1822 - 1899) Confederate brigadier general, commanded the 'Tramp Brigade'. Walker was severely wounded and captured at the Battle of Ware Bottom Church during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. He was struck in the left arm and lost his left leg after he led a charge into the Union line and was subjected to a rifle volley after refusing to surrender, and was then captured. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Atlanta, Jan. 25 (n.y. but postwar), to a major, enclosing an application form and calculating premium charges on an insurance policy. He signs ‘W. S. Walker’ at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, with the pencil nickname ‘Live Oak’ added beside the signature and an additional pencil identifying inscription at the bottom of the second page, otherwise in fine condition.
