Description
(1744-1817) American public official, the first postmaster of New York appointed by the Continental Congress, and third Postmaster General of the United States under George Washington. Sacked for prohibiting publishers to distribute newspapers by mail during the Constitutional Convention. Scarce, lengthy A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Nov. 28, 1810, to his sister, Elizabeth Breese. Much personal content related to his finances, religion, his love of Pennsylvania, family matters and more. He signs ‘Eben Hazard’ at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a seal tear to the uninscribed area, with folds, a few spots of foxing, still in very good, easily legible condition overall.
