Description
(1749-1820) American politician, Jefferson's Attorney General and Governor of Massachusetts, elected a member of the Continental Congress but declined to serve. As Jefferson’s acting Secretary of State upon his inauguration, Lincoln followed Jefferson’s directive not to issue commissions to judges appointed by outgoing president John Adams, setting the stage for the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in favor of judicial review in Marbury v. Madison. Scarce A.N.S., 1p. 7.25 x 3 in., [n.p.], Oct. 27, 1795, a receipt for legal work performed on the behalf of a John Flagg. Lincoln signs at the conclusion, the signature showing some brushing to the ink. Shows folds, ragged at the right edge, with a pencil identifying inscription at bottom left, otherwise in very good overall condition.
