Description
SID VICIOUS (1957-1979) born Simon Richie, was the bassist of the seminal punk band The Sex Pistols. A very rare relic, Vicious’ mug shot, 5 in. x 8 in. b/w, for his arrest on the violation of bail terms following the murder of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungeon in October 1978. The front of the mug shot shows the haggard artist in the typical side and front views. On the verso appears a variety of particulars, including the booking no. 4334003, Vicious real name ‘Ritchie, John Simon’, his occupation as ‘Musician’, birthdate, charge of ‘PL 120.10 – PL 265.01’ (Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree), and a note that his $50,000 bail had been revoked by Judge Betty Ellerin. On Dec. 7, 1978, Vicious was re-arrested and remanded to Riker’s Island after attacking and injuring the brother of fellow punk rock icon Patti Smith with a broken beer bottle at the popular nightclub ‘Hurrah!’. Ellerin also ordered that he report daily to a methadone clinic, avoid nightclubs, and stay away from alcohol. Ironically, Vicious would die from a heroin overdose just two months after this arrest, on February 2, 1979. Two staples at right and left margins, a central fold, else very good.
