Description
LAVINIA REAM HOXIE (1847-1914) American sculptor, the first and youngest woman artist to be commissioned by the U. S. Government, crafting the life-size Carrera marble statue of Abraham Lincoln which now stands in the Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol. She also executed the first free-standing statue of a Native American, that of Cherokee linguist and representative Sequoyah, also on display in the Statuary Hall, and the first major monument of a U.S. Navy officer, the statue of Adm. David G. Farragut at Farragut Square in Washington, D.C. Scarce partly-printed D.S. using her married name ‘V R Hoxie’, 1p. oblong 12mo., Washington, D.C., Oct. 23, 1905, a check drawn on the Riggs National Bank in the amount of $70.13. Ream signs at bottom right in black ink, her signature unfortunately punch-cancelled ‘PAID’. Shows vertical folds, with a pinhole at center, otherwise in very good condition overall.
