Elbert Hubbard’s Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Musicians, Volume Eight, New Series, published by the Roycrofters at East Aurora, New York, 1901. This hand-illuminated Roycroft Press edition is individually numbered 100 from a limited edition of just 947 copies and bears Elbert Hubbard’s bold signature along with the notation identifying the illuminator, Grace Knisely. Printed on handmade paper and richly decorated with hand-illuminated initials and ornamental title pages in the distinctive Arts and Crafts style for which the Roycroft Press became renowned. Illustrated with portrait plates and featuring biographical essays on Richard Wagner, Niccolò Paganini, Frédéric Chopin, Wolfgang Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Felix Mendelssohn. Bound in the original suede leather with leather title labels to the front cover and spine.

Good condition. Complete with the signed limitation page. The original suede binding exhibits wear with losses at the spine ends, corners, and portions of the cover edges, along with scattered rubbing, staining, and soiling. Internally, the handmade pages remain clean with light expected age toning and only occasional minor handling wear. A desirable Roycroft production retaining its decorative hand illumination and signed limitation leaf.

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, philosopher, and founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York. Inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement of William Morris, Hubbard transformed Roycroft into one of America’s foremost centers of handcrafted bookmaking, furniture, and decorative arts. His Little Journeys series became one of the most successful literary projects of the early twentieth century, introducing readers to the lives of influential historical figures through elegantly produced limited editions that remain highly collectible today.
