Original pen and ink daily comic strip artwork by Hal Forrest (1895-1975) for the popular aviation adventure comic Tailspin Tommy. Executed on original artist’s board measuring approximately 22.5 x 7 inches, the four-panel daily strip is dated January 16, 1940 and depicts Tommy leading the “Three Black Hawks” on a bombing mission against the Delmozai munitions plant before encountering an anti-aircraft ambush. The artwork is signed by Hal Forrest in the lower right corner.

Very good condition. Light age toning, light edge wear, scattered handling wear, and expected production wear consistent with original newspaper comic artwork. Pencil editorial notation reading “AMBUSH!” appears at the top margin. 

Hal Forrest was an American illustrator and cartoonist best known for co-creating Tailspin Tommy with writer Glenn Chaffin in 1928. Among the earliest and most successful aviation adventure comic strips, Tailspin Tommy captured the excitement of the golden age of flight and became a national sensation, inspiring radio programs, film serials, books, and merchandise. Forrest’s dynamic artwork and technically accurate depictions of aircraft helped establish Tailspin Tommy as one of the defining adventure strips of its era.
