Dick Rutan (1938–2024) was the pilot of the experimental aircraft Voyager during its historic around-the-world flight. A decorated U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and Vietnam veteran, Rutan and Jeana Yeager completed the first nonstop, non-refueled flight around the globe between December 14 and December 23, 1986, establishing one of the greatest endurance achievements in aviation history.
Burt Rutan (b. 1943) is one of the most influential aircraft designers in modern aviation history. Founder of Scaled Composites, he designed Voyager specifically for the record-breaking circumnavigation. Burt later revolutionized private spaceflight with SpaceShipOne, the first privately funded crewed spacecraft to reach space, earning the 2004 Ansari X Prize.
Jeana Yeager (b. 1952) served as co-pilot of Voyager during its record-setting around-the-world flight. Alongside Dick Rutan, she endured more than nine days in the cramped experimental aircraft without landing or refueling, helping achieve one of aviation’s most extraordinary milestones. Their accomplishment demonstrated the remarkable efficiency of Burt Rutan’s innovative aircraft design and remains one of the defining achievements in the history of flight.
