The STS-8 commemorative cover autographed by the mission’s complete five-member crew: Richard H. Truly, Daniel C. Brandenstein, Guion S. Bluford Jr., Dale A. Gardner, and William E. Thornton. Postmarked at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on September 5, 1983, the cover commemorates Space Shuttle Challenger’s STS-8 mission. Signed by every member of the crew, the mission is remembered as the first Space Shuttle launch and landing conducted at night and for carrying Guion S. Bluford Jr., who became the first African American to travel into space. STS-8 also deployed the Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B) and conducted numerous scientific and engineering experiments, demonstrating the Shuttle’s growing capabilities as an operational spacecraft.

Richard H. Truly (1937–2024) piloted the final free flight of Enterprise during the Approach and Landing Tests before commanding STS-8. He later served as the eighth Administrator of NASA from 1989 to 1992.

Daniel C. Brandenstein (b. 1943) flew four Space Shuttle missions, commanding three of them. A former U.S. Navy aviator and test pilot, he later held senior leadership positions within NASA’s Astronaut Office.

Guion S. Bluford Jr. (b. 1942) became the first African American astronaut to fly in space during STS-8. A decorated U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and aerospace engineer, he went on to complete four Space Shuttle missions and became one of NASA’s most celebrated astronauts.

Dale A. Gardner (1948–2014) flew two Space Shuttle missions and is best remembered for the daring recovery of the stranded Westar VI and Palapa B2 communications satellites during STS-51-A using the Manned Maneuvering Unit, one of the Shuttle program’s most iconic satellite rescue operations.

William E. Thornton (1929–2021) was a physician and NASA astronaut who flew aboard STS-8 and STS-51-B. His pioneering work in space medicine and human physiology significantly advanced NASA’s understanding of the effects of human spaceflight.
