Launched aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on March 2, 1995, STS-67 carried the ASTRO-2 observatory, a sophisticated suite of ultraviolet telescopes designed to study stars, galaxies, planets, and other celestial phenomena. The mission lasted over sixteen days, setting a then-record duration for a Space Shuttle flight and producing a wealth of scientific data that advanced astronomers’ understanding of the universe.

Lawrence completed four Space Shuttle flights during her NASA career. Tamara E. Jernigan flew on five shuttle missions and conducted a spacewalk. Samuel T. Durrance was an astrophysicist and payload specialist whose research focused on ultraviolet astronomy. Ronald A. Parise was a physicist and payload specialist who flew on both ASTRO shuttle missions. Together, the crew carried out one of the most successful astronomy missions ever conducted aboard the Space Shuttle.
