STS-65 commemorative First Day Cover autographed by six members of the seven-person crew: Robert D. Cabana, James D. Halsell, Richard J. Hieb, Carl E. Walz, Leroy Chiao, and Donald A. Thomas. Postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, May 21, 1981, on the First Day of Issue for the “Understanding the Sun” and “Comprehending the Universe” stamps, the cover commemorates STS-65, flown aboard Space Shuttle Columbia from July 8–23, 1994. The mission carried the Second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2), one of the Shuttle Program’s most significant international science missions, conducting more than 80 experiments in life sciences, materials science, biotechnology, and fluid physics.

Robert D. Cabana (b. 1949) is a retired U.S. Marine Corps major general and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions before serving as Director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

James D. Halsell Jr. (1956–2021) was a U.S. Air Force colonel and NASA astronaut who flew five Space Shuttle missions, logging more than 1,200 hours in space.

Richard J. Hieb (b. 1955) is a former NASA astronaut who flew three Space Shuttle missions, participating in satellite deployment, spacewalks, and scientific research.

Carl E. Walz (b. 1955) is a former NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions and later served aboard the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 4.

Leroy Chiao (b. 1960) is a former NASA astronaut who flew four space missions and commanded Expedition 10 aboard the International Space Station, accumulating more than 229 days in space.

Donald A. Thomas (b. 1955) is a former NASA astronaut and materials scientist who flew four Space Shuttle missions, conducting extensive microgravity and space science research.
