STS-61-A full crew autographed cover signed by Henry W. Hartsfield Jr., Steven R. Nagel, Bonnie J. Dunbar, James Buchli, Guion S. Bluford Jr., Reinhard Furrer, Ernst Messerschmid, and Wubbo Ockels. The cover bears a Kennedy Space Center postmark dated October 30, 1985, and is signed by all eight members of the historic STS-61-A mission crew.
Launched aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on October 30, 1985, STS-61-A was a Spacelab mission and remains notable as the largest crew ever flown aboard a single Space Shuttle flight. The mission carried a diverse international team and conducted dozens of scientific and technological experiments in the Spacelab module. It was also the first shuttle mission to include a payload controlled primarily from outside the United States, with operations coordinated from the German Space Operations Center in Oberpfaffenhofen.
The crew consisted of Commander Henry Hartsfield, Pilot Steven Nagel, Mission Specialists James Buchli, Guion Bluford, and Bonnie Dunbar, along with Payload Specialists Reinhard Furrer and Ernst Messerschmid of West Germany and Wubbo Ockels of the Netherlands. Ockels became the first Dutch citizen in space, while Furrer and Messerschmid became the first West Germans to fly aboard the Space Shuttle.
