Details:
STS-51-F full crew autographed cover signed by C. Gordon Fullerton, Roy D. Bridges Jr., Karl G. Henize, F. Story Musgrave, Anthony W. England, Loren W. Acton, and John-David F. Bartoe. The cover bears an Edwards Air Force Base, California postmark dated August 6, 1985, and features the complete crew of the eighth Space Shuttle mission and nineteenth flight of the Space Shuttle program.
Launched aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on July 29, 1985, STS-51-F was the first dedicated Spacelab astronomy mission. During the flight, the crew conducted a wide range of solar, astrophysical, and atmospheric investigations utilizing the Spacelab 2 laboratory. The mission is also remembered for overcoming an in-flight main engine shutdown shortly after launch, requiring the crew and mission controllers to execute an emergency abort-to-orbit procedure while successfully carrying out much of the planned scientific program.
The signatures represent an accomplished group of astronauts, scientists, and aerospace professionals. Commander C. Gordon Fullerton was a veteran astronaut and former Space Shuttle test pilot. Roy D. Bridges Jr. later served as Director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center. Karl G. Henize was an astronomer and astronaut who flew on this mission. Story Musgrave became one of NASA’s most celebrated astronauts with six shuttle flights. Anthony England, Loren Acton, and John-David Bartoe served as mission specialists and payload specialists, helping conduct the mission’s extensive scientific experiments.
