STS-51-D was the sixteenth flight of the Space Shuttle program and the fourth mission of Discovery, launched on April 12, 1985. During the seven-day mission, the crew deployed the Canadian Anik C-1 and Syncom IV-3 (Leasat 3) communications satellites. After the Leasat satellite failed to activate properly, the crew conducted an unplanned spacewalk in an unsuccessful attempt to manually trigger the spacecraft, providing valuable experience for future on-orbit satellite servicing missions. The flight also carried U.S. Senator Jake Garn of Utah as a congressional payload specialist, making him one of the first sitting members of Congress to fly in space.
