STS-41-G was the thirteenth flight of the Space Shuttle program and the sixth mission of Challenger, launched on October 5, 1984. The eight-day mission deployed the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS), conducted extensive Earth observation and oceanographic experiments, and featured the first untethered EVA planning that helped advance future satellite servicing techniques. The mission was historic for several milestones, including the first spaceflight by Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau, the first flight of oceanographer Paul D. Scully-Power, the first mission to carry two women astronauts—Sally K. Ride and Kathryn D. Sullivan—and Sullivan’s achievement as the first American woman to perform a spacewalk.
