Details:
STS-41-B full crew autographed cover signed by Vance D. Brand, Robert L. Gibson, Ronald E. McNair, Robert L. Stewart, and Bruce McCandless II. The cover features a mission cachet depicting Space Shuttle Challenger and bears a Houston, Texas postmark dated February 3, 1984, the launch date of the mission.
Launched aboard Challenger on February 3, 1984, STS-41-B was a landmark Space Shuttle mission. The flight is best remembered for astronaut Bruce McCandless II conducting the first untethered spacewalk in history using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), allowing him to fly freely in space without a physical connection to the spacecraft. The mission also included the deployment of communications satellites and a variety of engineering and scientific objectives.
The cover is signed by the mission’s entire crew: Commander Vance Brand, Pilot Robert Gibson, Mission Specialists Ronald McNair, Robert Stewart, and Bruce McCandless II. Several members of the crew would go on to distinguished NASA careers, while Ronald McNair remains one of the most remembered figures in the history of the American space program. A physicist and accomplished astronaut, McNair later served as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Challenger’s STS-51-L mission and was tragically killed in the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. His inclusion on this complete crew-signed cover adds additional historical significance and connects the piece to one of the defining events in NASA history.
A desirable full crew-signed Challenger mission cover representing one of the most important Space Shuttle flights of the early program and featuring the autograph of Challenger astronaut Ronald McNair.
