Postmarked at Edwards, California, on May 8, 1989, the cover commemorates STS-34, flown aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis. Launched on October 18, 1989, the mission’s primary objective was the successful deployment of the Galileo spacecraft, which embarked on its historic journey to Jupiter and forever transformed our understanding of the giant planet and its moons. The mission also carried out numerous secondary scientific investigations during its five-day flight.

Donald E. Williams (1942–2016) was a U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut who flew two Space Shuttle missions, serving as pilot of STS-51-D and commander of STS-34, which deployed the Galileo spacecraft.
Michael J. McCulley (b. 1943) is a retired U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut who piloted STS-34, contributing to the successful deployment of Galileo before later serving in leadership roles within the aerospace industry.
Shannon W. Lucid (b. 1943) is one of NASA’s most accomplished astronauts, flying five Space Shuttle missions and setting a then-record for the longest single spaceflight by an American during her 188-day stay aboard Mir. She is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
Franklin Chang-Díaz (b. 1950) is a physicist and former NASA astronaut who flew a record seven Space Shuttle missions. He later became a leading figure in advanced plasma propulsion research.
Ellen S. Baker (b. 1953) is a physician and former NASA astronaut who flew three Space Shuttle missions. She later served in NASA’s medical and educational programs, helping train future astronauts and advancing space medicine.
