STS-31 commemorative cover autographed by the entire five-member crew: Loren J. Shriver, Charles F. Bolden Jr., Bruce McCandless II, Steven A. Hawley, and Kathryn D. Sullivan. Cancelled with a NASA Bay Branch, Houston, Texas postmark dated May 4, 1989, the cover commemorates STS-31, flown aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. Launched on April 24, 1990, the mission is best remembered for the successful deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the most important scientific instruments ever placed into orbit. Hubble revolutionized modern astronomy, leading to groundbreaking discoveries ranging from the age of the universe to the existence of supermassive black holes and thousands of distant galaxies.

Loren J. Shriver (b. 1944) is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and NASA astronaut who flew three Space Shuttle missions, commanding STS-31, the historic Hubble Space Telescope deployment mission.

Charles F. Bolden Jr. (b. 1946) is a retired U.S. Marine Corps major general and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions before serving as the 12th Administrator of NASA from 2009 to 2017.

Bruce McCandless II (1937–2017) was a NASA astronaut best known for performing the first untethered spacewalk in history during STS-41-B, becoming one of the most iconic figures of the Space Shuttle era.

Steven A. Hawley (b. 1951) is an astrophysicist and former NASA astronaut who flew five Space Shuttle missions, including STS-31, where he operated the Shuttle’s robotic arm to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope.

Kathryn D. Sullivan (b. 1951) is a geologist, former NASA astronaut, and the first American woman to perform a spacewalk. She later served as Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and became the first woman to reach both outer space and the deepest point in Earth’s oceans.
