STS-30 commemorative cover autographed by the entire five-member crew: David M. Walker, Ronald J. Grabe, Mark C. Lee, Norman E. Thagard, and Mary L. Cleave. Cancelled with a NASA Bay Branch, Houston, Texas postmark dated September 29, 1988, the cover commemorates STS-30, flown aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis. Launched on May 4, 1989, the mission successfully deployed the Magellan spacecraft, NASA’s first planetary probe launched from the Space Shuttle. Magellan entered orbit around Venus in 1990 and used radar mapping to reveal more than 98 percent of the planet’s surface, revolutionizing scientific understanding of Earth’s nearest planetary neighbor.

David M. Walker (1944–2024) was a U.S. Air Force officer and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions, commanding three of them, including STS-30, which deployed the Magellan spacecraft.
Ronald J. Grabe (b. 1945) is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions, serving as pilot and mission specialist during a distinguished Shuttle career.
Mark C. Lee (b. 1952) is a former U.S. Air Force colonel and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions, including two involving spacewalks, and played a key role in the assembly and servicing of spaceflight hardware.
Norman E. Thagard (b. 1943) is a physician, retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, and NASA astronaut who flew five space missions, including a historic long-duration expedition aboard the Russian space station Mir, becoming the first American to launch aboard a Russian rocket.
Mary L. Cleave (1947–2023) was a NASA astronaut and environmental engineer who flew two Space Shuttle missions before serving as NASA’s Associate Administrator for Science, helping oversee many of the agency’s Earth and space science programs.
