STS-26 commemorative cover autographed by the entire five-member crew: Frederick H. Hauck, Richard O. Covey, John M. Lounge, David C. Hilmers, and George D. Nelson. Postmarked at Pasadena, California, on September 29, 1988, the cover commemorates STS-26, the historic Return to Flight mission following the loss of Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986. Flown aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, the mission successfully deployed the TDRS-C communications satellite and restored confidence in the Shuttle program after a comprehensive redesign and safety review, marking one of NASA’s most significant milestones.

Frederick H. Hauck (b. 1941) is a retired U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut who commanded STS-26. During his three Shuttle missions, he helped lead NASA’s successful return to human spaceflight following the Challenger disaster.
Richard O. Covey (b. 1946) is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant general and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions. As pilot of STS-26, he played a critical role in executing NASA’s historic Return to Flight mission.
John M. Lounge (1946–2011) was a NASA astronaut who flew three Space Shuttle missions. An aerospace engineer, he contributed to numerous satellite deployment and scientific research missions during his career.
David C. Hilmers (b. 1950) is a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, physician, and NASA astronaut who flew four Space Shuttle missions. Following his astronaut career, he devoted himself to medicine and humanitarian service around the world.
George D. Nelson (b. 1950) flew three Space Shuttle missions and performed several spacewalks, including satellite retrieval and repair operations. An accomplished engineer and educator, he later held senior technical and management positions within NASA.
