Bruce McCandless II, S. David Griggs, Karol Bobko, and Gordon Fullerton autographed “Space Shuttle Wind Tunnel Test” First Day cover, postmarked McClellan Field, California, July 30, 1976. Each signer has signed the cover in ink, with Bruce McCandless II adding the inscription, “To Mr. Campbell.”

Bruce McCandless II (1937-2017) was a NASA astronaut best remembered for making the first untethered spacewalk in history during STS-41-B in 1984 using the Manned Maneuvering Unit. S. David Griggs (1939-1989) flew three Space Shuttle missions before his untimely death in an aircraft accident. Karol J. Bobko (1937-2019) was a veteran of three Space Shuttle flights, including the maiden voyage of Challenger (STS-6), and played an important role in the early development of the Shuttle program. C. Gordon Fullerton (1936-2013), a former U.S. Air Force test pilot and NASA astronaut, flew aboard Columbia and Challenger before serving for many years as one of NASA’s leading research pilots at the Dryden Flight Research Center. Together, these four men made significant contributions to the advancement of the Space Shuttle program and American human spaceflight.
