Space Shuttle Enterprise test pilots and flight crew autographed commemorative cover honoring the Approach and Landing Test (ALT) Program, postmarked Edwards, California, March 2, 1977. The cover depicts the Shuttle Orbiter mounted atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft during a captive flight test and is signed by Fitzhugh L. Fulton Jr., A. J. Roy, Victor W. Horton, and Skip Guidry.

The cover commemorates Captive Flight No. 5 of the Shuttle Enterprise test program conducted at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center. During the ALT program, the prototype Shuttle Enterprise was carried atop a modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft to evaluate aerodynamic characteristics, ground handling procedures, and operational systems before the commencement of free-flight glide tests later in 1977.

The signatures represent key members of the flight crews responsible for conducting and supporting these historic test flights. Pilot Fitzhugh “Fitz” Fulton Jr. was one of NASA’s most accomplished research aviators and served as a principal pilot of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The cover is additionally signed by A. J. Roy, Victor W. Horton, and Skip Guidry, all of whom participated in the flight operations and testing activities that helped pave the way for the Space Shuttle program.

Fulton Jr. (1925-2015) was a legendary NASA research pilot who flew numerous experimental aircraft and served as one of the principal pilots of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft during the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Test program. His distinguished career spanned more than four decades of flight testing and aerospace research.

A. J. Roy, Victor W. Horton, and Skip Guidry were members of the NASA and flight operations teams associated with the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Shuttle test programs at Dryden Flight Research Center during the formative years of Space Shuttle development. Their work contributed to the successful evaluation and eventual operational deployment of the Space Shuttle system.
