Dick Scobee autographed cover commemorating the world tour of Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101). The cover features a cachet depicting Enterprise mounted atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and bears a United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado postmark dated May 19, 1983. Scobee has signed prominently across the front in bold ink.

The cover commemorates Space Shuttle Enterprise, NASA’s prototype orbiter used during the Approach and Landing Test program and later exhibited during a series of promotional appearances. Although Enterprise never flew in space, it played a vital role in validating the shuttle’s aerodynamic flight characteristics and helped pave the way for the operational Space Shuttle fleet.

Richard H. “Dick” Scobee (1939-1986) was a United States Air Force pilot, test pilot, and NASA astronaut selected in 1978 as part of NASA Astronaut Group 8. He first flew in space as pilot of STS-41-C aboard Space Shuttle Challenger in April 1984 and later commanded STS-51-L. Scobee and his six crewmates were tragically killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986, seventy-three seconds after launch.
