Schirra played a key role in the development and operational success of America’s early manned spaceflight efforts.

Maxime A. Faget (1921-2004) was a pioneering aerospace engineer and one of the founding architects of NASA’s manned spaceflight program. He designed the Mercury capsule and contributed substantially to the Gemini spacecraft, Apollo command module, and Space Shuttle orbiter. Faget is widely regarded as one of the most influential engineers in the history of American space exploration.
