James A. “Jim” McDivitt (1929-2022) was a NASA astronaut, Air Force test pilot, and one of the pioneering figures of the American space program. He commanded the historic Gemini 4 mission in 1965, during which Ed White performed the first American spacewalk, and later commanded Apollo 9 in 1969, the crucial Earth-orbital mission that successfully tested the Lunar Module in flight before the Apollo lunar landings. McDivitt later served in NASA management, overseeing the Apollo Spacecraft Program and contributing significantly to the success of the Apollo era.
