Jim Irwin autographed commemorative postal cover honoring the 65th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt becoming the first U.S. president to fly in an airplane. Issued as part of the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum’s Milestones of Flight commemorative series, the cover is postmarked October 11, 1975. Irwin has signed the cover prominently in black ink.

James B. “Jim” Irwin (1930-1991) served as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 15 and became the eighth person to walk on the Moon in July 1971. Alongside Commander David Scott, he explored the Hadley-Apennine region and helped conduct one of the most scientifically productive lunar missions of the Apollo program, including the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Following his retirement from NASA, Irwin founded the evangelical organization High Flight Foundation and devoted much of his life to Christian ministry and public speaking.
